Teach English in Peru!

NGO description

Educate. Empower. Bring Change to ethically to Huaycán.

The Light and Leadership Initiative's mission is to respond to the needs of the women and youth in the Ate-Vitarte district of Lima, Peru in their struggle out of poverty by improving the availability and quality of education offered to women and children. Through workshops and classes, women are empowered to better care for themselves and their families by improving both their physical and emotional well being, as well as advancing their skills in the workforce. Youth are offered similar opportunities including English, reading, math, art, chess, community leadership and much more thus learning the value of education and respect for one's community. We believe the women and children of the Ate-Vitarte district will become positive leaders for change through love, support, and education.

We also offer a volunteer program, allowing volunteers to work along side the program's participants, learn about Peruvian culture, and establish life long friendships. Our volunteer program is distinctively ethically-based; volunteers are given resources and reading materials pre-arrival both delineating the potentially problematic issues intrinsic international service and also offering teaching/lesson plan/management guides to volunteers to review before arriving in Huaycán. We host monthly Civic reflections that invite volunteers to think critically about social issues that are present in the work they are doing. We have a social media policy that focuses on the participants in the Huaycán community rather than glorifying the experience of the volunteer. Community members and participants participate in meetings and complete yearly feedback forms to voice their thoughts on the organization. Yet, this doesn't mean we devalue volunteers! Volunteers play an essential role in our organization offering sustainable programs and implementing new ideas. Looking to make a difference? We can help you help Huaycán!

We are registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Tinley Park, Illinois. We began program operations in June of 2009.
